This project wasn't built in a boardroom. It was born from a motel room in Bend, Oregon — and a determination to turn a painful experience into something that helps thousands.
I'm a graphic artist and technologist, 40+ years in computers and design. In October 2023, I relocated from Orlando, Florida to Bend, Oregon to launch a coffee line. While building it, I also worked overnight as a safety monitor at the Lighthouse Navigation Center, Shepherd's House Ministries' low-barrier shelter here in Bend — a job that put me on the inside of the system I'd eventually need myself.
Then I got sick. While undergoing diagnosis for Hashimoto's disease, an autoimmune condition, I had to leave that job. My landlord wouldn't wait for rental assistance to process, and I was forced out of my apartment. For the past 8+ months I've lived in motels in Bend, working retail, with my two ESA cats, Pip and Squeak, as my constant companions through all of it.
Every resource I needed was out there somewhere. It just wasn't anywhere I could find fast enough. Scattered phone numbers. Waitlists with no updates. Websites that assumed I had reliable internet, a car, and the energy to keep asking the same question twice. I'd worked the other side of this exact system months earlier and I still felt completely lost in it.
Crystal is named after the woman who manages the two motels I've stayed in. She gave me a flat rate during the off-season and treated me with real kindness when it mattered most.
That's where Crystal Clear App started. Not as a business plan, but as the thing I wished existed on the worst nights: one calm place, one voice, no wrong door. Crystal, the AI guide inside the app, carries her kindness forward into something that can reach a lot more people than any one person could on their own.
Crystal Clear App (CCA) is the platform, the reusable engine. OUR CLEAR HAVEN is its first deployment: a free resource navigator for people experiencing homelessness in Central Oregon. I'm building it in every spare hour I have, with Pip and Squeak by my side.

I'm not building this from a comfortable office or a theoretical idea. I'm building it from a motel room, with Pip and Squeak curled up beside me, because I've lived the exact problem we're trying to solve. With support, OUR CLEAR HAVEN can launch across Oregon in 2027 and, eventually, the CCA platform can power new deployments well beyond homelessness, so no one else has to feel as lost as I did.

It started with a day planner — a tool I was designing to bring clarity to chaotic days. That idea grew into a story called The Legend of the Infinite Shroom: a future where AI does everything for us, yet people still feel lost. The story's message was simple — true happiness isn't something handed to you. It's something you find within.
Then life gave me the ultimate test of that message. While navigating homelessness in a Bend motel, working retail and managing a chronic illness, I discovered how confusing and overwhelming the help system truly is. One kind motel manager became a lifeline in my darkest days, and I named the AI guide Crystal after her. Through all of it, Pip and Squeak were beside me — as they are now.
From a day planner… to a story about finding happiness within… to a real-life crisis in a Bend motel… Crystal was born.
OUR CLEAR HAVEN is built on lived experience, not credentials it doesn't have. George worked briefly as an overnight safety monitor, not decades of front-line crisis work. There's no fixed 90-day launch calendar, just the Now/Next/Goal path above. No fiscal sponsor is confirmed yet. If it isn't on this site or in the source documents, it isn't claimed.
